What will the P1000 upgrade be like ?
Nov 30, 2018
1
The P900 was announced on Mar 2, 2015 and the P1000 was announced on Jul 10, 2018 so that is 3 years and 4 months apart so if the next Nikon superzoom upgrade to the P1000 is in late 2021 it should have something like the Sony IMX586 48mp 1/2" sensor for shooting at 30fps and DCI 4K 90p video.
https://www.dpreview.com/news/0249781150/sony-imx586-smartphone-sensor-comes-with-48mp-and-quad-bayer-design
In 3 years the new 985MB/s SD Express cards should be common by then for shooting full 48mp images @30fps and DCI 4K video (4096x2160) @ 90fps.
https://www.dpreview.com/news/7847794311/sd-express-sduc-memory-cards-association
As far as the lens maybe make it start at a wide 19.5mm like the new 102x Kodak Pixpro AZ1000 superzoom. P1100 with 125x 19,5-2438mm F2.8-F7.1 ?

I hope the next generation has better sensor and image quality. Moreover, weight should be less.
3000mm is ok for me, but with better image quality.

One simple modification which would be very helpful would be to allow more custom settings like the single "U" setting which is available now. That might even be done with a firmware upgrade for those who want it, without modifying the camera's construction.
As for having a wider angle lens available, is that even possible, while protecting the P1000s mystique of its 3000mm lens? If the P900 goes out to 2000, it's already right behind the P1000 in tele range. I actually think there'd be a bigger market for improving the P900 - so much could be done with that camera; it could open up a whole new market if it underwent a major design upgrade.
I wonder if there's a market for putting a slightly larger sensor, even a 1/1.7 sensor, into something similar to the P1000.

The biggest opportunity is in the software department...remove the silly restrictions like forcing wifi through an underperformer Snapbridge app, add raw to scene modes, make the menu more friendly, more custom function/buttons. The P1000 was a step backward in the area vs the P900, still acknowledging all the other improvements: 4k, manual focus ring, etc
In relation to hardware...keep the size of the p1000, reduce the FL back to 2000 and increase the sensor instead.

I strongly disagree, too lazy to calculate now but you'd get a very minimal sensor increase for those 1000mm of FL, it's questionable if IQ improvement would be noticeable unless you pixel peep

Seeing the fast evolution of the smartphones cameras, I'm more and more convinced that the zoom cameras will remain the only cameras for the consumers on the market
Thank you for that interesting post,

Those are all excellent suggestions, especially the focal length and sensor ones.
I might add "omit most of the silly "Scenes" which have become so popular in new digicams - for reasons which are impossible to understand. A couple of the "Scenes" for the P cameras are quite popular and therefore they must be quite useful - "Bird" - and (also for reasons I can't understand) "Moon". Keep those, because people really like them and use them.
Or do people use all of those "Scenes" in their photography???

2/3 sensor size. Roughly double the area. ~ 4 crop factor.

Get rid of diffraction somehow. Maybe 500 or so mm lens, bigger sensor....
Faster focus.

I don't think anyone uses all scene modes... the P1000 is obviously about its reach, so surely birdwatching, moon, maybe sports are the most used.
However, you may want to take a picture of something else ocassionally so the other scene mode gives you the option to do that quickly (i.e. the very odd time I have used landscape or portrait just because the opportunity presented itself).
Too many scene modes don't bother me, but some of them feel a bit redundant alright.

Are you for real ? You could have said the same thing about the P900 and every other camera the last 100 years. BTW that video is 4 months old and I replied to it when it was posted.

I don’t use all, but I’m using a few on the P900, as they can be useful for a beginner in a hurry! Looking at the data also gives me a rough idea of what sort settings to try another time.
For e.g. I like Dawn/Dusk as I love the dawn, but during term time I may only have a few moments to take a photo while juggling the rest of the morning routine. I have been struggling to get good photos of it on my own, so it helps get results while I am learning. I quite like sepia too as I can check how the photo will look at the time of taking it and take other compositions if necessary. I’m using close up a lot, and of course bird watching :-). Also a nice surprise was that my teenage daughter is very enthusiastic the moon one and it has actually got her outside and looking up. She’s enjoying the fun of pressing ok and letting the camera zoom in on the moon and amazed at the results - it has led to a few discussions on the moon etc. She’s quite knowledgeable about particle physics and is very academic, but it can be a challenge to her out of her room and and engaged with the natural world.
I can live without the others!
Anyway, I can quite see that for experienced photographers these wouldn’t be at all relevant but maybe they are there to increase the target market?
Catherine
edited to add: given the difference in price between the P900 and P1000, perhaps what I’ve said isn’t as relevantto the P1000. Beginners more likely to learn on something less expensive first perhaps.

Speed, Buffer ect?
In reply to P10004K • Dec 19, 2018

Well, I think nikon kind of sand bagged the camera a little in regards to speed performance. I love this camera and would use it more but sometimes I have to resort to my DSLR gear. Why ???
Focus speed, buffer size is so low, and iso is so so.
I think we might be lucky to get another super zoom like the P1000 to be honest. The industry is pushing us towards full frame cameras. The point an shoot , bridge cameras are dying sadly. In 2009 there were like 11 P&S cameras by each manufacture. Now only about 1 or 2.
I think nikon made the p1000 have these limitations because they are afraid of replacing some of their DSLR gear. The FZ300, FZ80 have a huge buffer. I can shoot like 50 to 100 images on those cameras. The p1000 seems to bog down around 7 to 21 shots. Kind of sucks. THe focus is a bit slower to capture moving objects, can be done but you know. Iso is not the greatest because of the sensor ect.
So upgrades, 1. Buffer size, 2. Performance, 3 Iso,
Really like the p1000 just somewhat limited sometimes. I will be posting some studio shots here in a bit. You have also seen my eagle and pelican shots comparing my DLSR gear. The camera is so close to replacing my other gear but not close enough.
Jay

I also shoot with a full frame and they will never kill the superzoom camera since the widest range zoom for a full frame is only a 10x 24-240mm F3.5-F6.3 Sony FE. Try getting a 2600mm shot like this P1000 shot with an all in one full frame zoom.

Hard to believe this was shot with a small sensor - great image. I agree, there will always be a market for a huge range superzoom camera, even if it gets down to only one manufacturer.
