FAFSA SIMPLIFICATION
Making Correction to Your FAFSA
The ability to make corrections to a “Processed” 2024–25 FAFSA is now available. The Department of Education has provided detailed information on how to correct the most common FAFSA form errors (including missing signatures or consent, changing responses to loan questions, and other corrections). If You Filed For Aid (FAFSA) with a Short-Term Work-Around
A number of students used temporary work-arounds to file for 2024–25 financial aid by the May 2 priority deadline (especially students with mixed status families). If you used a work-around—for example, filing for only unsubsidized loans or filing CADAA instead of a FAFSA—you still need to take action. Refer to the new FAQ on our FAFSA Simplification web page: I used a short-term work-around to submit my FAFSA by the May 2 priority deadline, what do I need to do now?
Support for Students with Mixed Status Families
All students should be able to submit a completed FAFSA now, even with contributors who don’t have a Social Security Number (SSN). If you’re still having issues, please refer to the Federal Student Aid resource How to Submit the 2024-25 FAFSA Form if Your Contributor Doesn’t Have an SSN (updated May 2024). The linked resource includes information on how a contributor can update incorrect FSA ID account information by first invalidating their current account, then creating a new one (page 7 of the PDF), as well as other helpful trouble-shooting measures.

Summer Financial Aid – Apply by June 1, 2024
Thinking about enrolling in a Summer Session and interested in knowing what type of funding is available? If you are an admitted UC Berkeley student enrolled in a minimum of 6 summer units, and meet all other Summer eligibility requirements, a Summer financial aid package will be made available. Please keep in mind that you will need to file a 2023-24 FAFSA or CADAA by the priority deadline of Saturday, June 1, 2024, in order for us to determine your eligibility for summer financial aid. If you will be enrolling at another UC campus during the summer and wish to apply for financial aid, you can complete the Summer Intercampus Financial Aid Application through the Berkeley Financial Aid Forms portal.
The application must be filed no later than June 30, 2024.

2024-25 Financial Aid Packages Coming in May!
2024-25 financial aid packages for continuing students will start to be available via CalCentral in May. Be sure to visit the My Finances tab in CalCentral to view your offer once posted. If you haven’t submitted your 2024-25 application yet, it’s not too late. Be sure to apply for aid by the May 2 priority deadline.

2024-25 Economic Hardship Appeal Forms Available May 15
Starting May 15, you will be able to submit an Economic Hardship appeal for the 2024-25 academic year via the Berkeley Financial Aid Forms portal if the Parent Contribution or Student Contribution from your aid application does not accurately reflect your current situation. Before submitting an appeal, review our Economic Hardship Appeal flyer to learn if this is the right step for you. To estimate how an Economic Hardship appeal may impact your financial aid for next year, please review our How to Estimate Your Financial Aid page. Please note: if you have been selected for financial aid verification for 2024-25, you will not be able to submit an Economic Hardship appeal until after your verification is completed.
May 2 Deadline for Filing the Aid Application
May 2, 2024 is the priority deadline to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Application (CADAA) for consideration for the California state financial aid (Cal Grant and Middle Class Scholarship).
If you submitted a FAFSA prior to May 2, but it is rejected for parent or student signature, or other required corrections, you will be considered to have met the deadline as your aid application receipt date would be prior to May 2.
If your parent is having trouble getting a FSA ID to sign into the FAFSA and you are concerned about meeting the May 2, 2024 California grant deadline to file the FAFSA, please consider submitting the FAFSA without the parent information before May 2, 2024 in order to get a receipt date that meets the requirement to file by May 2.
Work-Study/LAEP
The last day to earn your 2023-24 work-study/LAEP award is Friday, May 10th. If you need to increase your award, you may have loans eligible for conversion to work-study/LAEP via CalCentral. The last date to complete a conversion request is Tuesday, April 30th.
While there is no summer work-study/LAEP available, if you are a continuing student you may be able to earn work-study/LAEP as early as July 1st using your 2024-25 work-study/LAEP award. Accept your 2024-25 work-study/LAEP award in CalCentral and begin your search for a work-study/LAEP job in the 2024-25 academic year by logging into the Work-Study Management System (WSMS).
Become a BUILD Reading Mentor
Earn work study or field units by helping K-5th graders grow their reading skills! BUILD mentors work in teams at 17 East Bay elementary after school programs to support struggling readers. If you do not have work study, you can mentor for units or as a volunteer. Average time commitment is 5-10 hours/week in the afternoons. Submit your application starting Sunday, May 12th.

2024-25 CA Enrollment Acknowledgement
As part of your Fall 2024 class enrollment, you must acknowledge notifications required by California State Law prior to enrollment.
Action Required
To complete this requirement, see the Tasks section of your Dashboard page in CalCentral.
Look for the task titled “CA Enrollment Acknowledgment” under your Finances tasks.
Click the “Respond” button to review and acknowledge the notification.
Note: You will not be able to enroll in fall 2024 classes until this requirement is complete.
2024-25 Verification Priority Deadline
Students attending Berkeley starting in fall 2024 have until Sunday, June 30th to complete their verification requirements to ensure funding by the start of the fall term. Get a jump start on your 2024-25 verification process today!
Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
Financial aid regulations require that students meet specific Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements to maintain eligibility for financial aid. Your academic record will be reviewed at the end of each Spring semester to determine if you are meeting SAP. This will determine whether or not you are eligible for financial aid in the following Summer, Fall and Spring semesters.
What this means for you
If you are not meeting SAP after we evaluate progress at the end of Spring 2024, your eligibility for financial aid for Summer and beyond will be put on hold.
Please note: Summer financial aid is awarded and disbursed before Spring grades are made available. If Summer aid is disbursed to you, and you are later determined to not meet SAP after Spring grades, your Summer aid will be cancelled, and a SAP Appeal will be made available for you.
If you are currently following an approved SAP Appeal, Summer aid will not be disbursed until after Spring grades are posted and progress is evaluated.
If a SAP Appeal is required, an appeal will be assigned for you to complete through the Berkeley Financial Aid Forms portal. Please review the appeal form to ensure you include all required documentation by the appropriate deadline.

Did You Know…?
Berkeley students receive over $900 million in financial aid each year. Completing the FAFSA or the California Dream Act Application is the first step to receiving financial aid. 2024-2025 financial aid applications are open now! The priority deadline is Tuesday, April 2.
FAFSA Application Workshop–second date added due to popular demand
Spring Break Services
The Financial Aid and Scholarships Office and Cal Student Central will adjust student services and hours during spring break week from March 25th-29th. At least one CSC full-time staff member will be on-site to collect documents, provide emergency loan checks, etc. Students will still be able to submit cases via an online form. As a reminder, the University will be closed on Friday, March 29th to celebrate Cesar Chavez Day and honor the civil rights leader, labor activist and co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America.

FAFSA SIMPLIFICATION
Reminder: The New FAFSA Form for 2024–25 is LIVE!
We expect to have financial aid packages available for continuing students beginning in May 2024, same as previous years, provided that you complete your aid application by the April 2, 2024 priority deadline.
Note: The Financial Aid and Scholarships Office awards gift aid based on financial need and not on a first-come-first-served basis. Completing your aid application before the priority deadline ensures your consideration for all aid you are eligible for, based on your application information.
Update for Mixed Status Families:
The Department of Education has resolved 2 critical errors that have been preventing many families from completing the FAFSA:
contributors who were unable to access the form due to not having an SSN can now complete the FAFSA after being invited by the student to do so.
contributors without an SSN who received the message “unauthorized to act on the student’s behalf” when logging in are now able to complete their portion of the application.
While these fixes do not address all the obstacles Mixed Status Families are facing, they will allow many to move forward with their application process. Review the Department of Education’s new tips document for FAFSA Contributor Updates for additional information.
For some this may not be the answer to your specific barrier in completing the current FAFSA, however, our office is dedicated to ensuring you have the most up-to-date information regarding these types of application technical issues as they are resolved.
FAFSA Corrections:
If you’ve already submitted your FAFSA, you are already well on your way for 2024-25. We know that sometimes, however, you may want or need to change the information you reported when you initially completed the application. The Department of Education is reporting that the ability to correct your 2024-25 FAFSA form that is in a “Processed” status will be available later this month. Census Proration
Census and Federal Pell & Cal Grants and MCS: Breaking it all down…
Federal Pell Grant, Cal Grant and Middle Class Scholarship (MCS) recipients enrolled in less than 12 units in the spring 2024 term either had their aid prorated or adjusted to reflect their level of enrollment at the 5th week of instruction, as of Friday, February 16, 2024. Review and aid adjustment will occur through the first week of March. If your award is prorated, you will receive a communication from the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office informing you that your Pell Grant, Cal Grant, and/or MCS award has been adjusted. The award adjustment may be supplemented with a combination of aid sources based on your eligibility and available funding. You can find more information on reduced course load on the How Aid Works webpage.
Once spring census and proration is complete, spring term Pell Grants, Cal Grants, and MCS awards will not be adjusted due to enrollment changes, even if you add or drop the number of units in which you are enrolled. However, Pell Grants may be further adjusted if you withdraw from all classes before the end of the academic term, or if a professor reports “non-attendance” in any course within that term. Like with census proration, a reduction to a Pell Grant based on an end of term change may be supplemented with a combination of aid sources, if funding is available.

New for 2023-4 – Academic Participation Assignment
The University has implemented a new system to guarantee that all undergraduate and graduate students receiving financial aid are participating in each of their courses at the start of the semester and we need your action! The University will verify student participation in their courses via a reading assignment on Academic Integrity which will consist of a single question. The University created this assignment to meet federal requirements established by the Department of Education. The assignment will be required for all students, regardless of their financial aid status, since their status can change throughout the year.
Check for an assignment on Academic Integrity, which will either be automatically generated in bCourses for you to complete or be sent in a direct email to you with a link. You can learn more about the requirement on our website’s Eligibility for Financial Aid at UC Berkeley page and how to complete the assignment in this knowledge base article. Please be on the lookout for these assignments in the first few weeks of the spring semester.

The deadline to submit an Expected Family Contribution Appeal for the 2022-2023 academic year is February 3, 2024. If your family income has changed since you submitted your aid application for the 2023-2024 academic year, you can submit an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) appeal via the Berkeley Financial Aid Forms website. Students with financial need are invited to submit an application for the Fall Semester to the Student Tech Equity Program (STEP) to request a laptop, iClicker and other related technology for the 2023-24 academic year.
